Patched for gdk cvs tree from sometime on 971119.  I don't think much 
has been going on in gdk, so this should work on most of the recent 
stuff.

This is a patch to gdk to make it work on 1 bit displays.  Most of
testgtk works well with this patch, as does most of gzilla.  Images
are not shown in gzilla.

This patch doesn't make GIMP work on 1 bit at all for at least a couple 
of reasons.  gtkpreview doesn't work on 1 bit displays, and even if you
get around that, then the pixmaps in the toolbar dump core.  

I expect this will allow most gnome apps to work, though I have not 
tested any of them.

Lastly, use with care.  Specifically, I'm not sure my patch to gdkcolor
will not mess up things on other bit depths.  ;-)
